No contact order lifted after waste water accident in the St. Joseph River

The no contact order has just been lifted Thursday morning for the St. Joseph River.

This is after 50,000 gallons of waste water accidentally spilled from the Three Rivers Waste Water treatment plant.

It happened Monday afternoon as the plant was in the process of an upgrade.

When switching pumps, the wastewater, equivalent to three average backyard swimming pools, was pumped into the St. Joseph River.

The issue was fixed two hours later.

The no contact order was issued as a precaution.

We spoke with Taylor Davis, the Three Rivers wastewater treatment plant superintendent.

"As soon as it wasn't pumping, We knew it wasn't. We set up finding the issues finding a bypass solution. It started overflowing at the lowest our collection system. But it was stopped within two hours," says Davis.

Three Rivers Wastewater Treatment Plant says drinking water is safe.
