Cannon Artes breaks ground on advanced wastewater treatment and water reuse plant in Qatar

Cannon Artes has commenced construction on a groundbreaking industrial wastewater treatment and water reuse facility within one of the Middle East’s premier petrochemical complexes. Located in Qatar, the plant will serve the water recovery needs of a massive polyolefin production facility.

Once operational, the facility will treat up to 25,000 cubic meters of effluent water daily, including cooling-tower-blow-down water, and recover up to 780 cubic meters per hour. The system is designed with a Near-Zero-Liquid-Discharge (NZLD) approach, drastically reducing wastewater output and setting new standards in environmental responsibility. This NZLD capability enables the plant to recover and reuse nearly 80% of its effluent water, well above the industry’s regulatory requirements.

Cannon Artes Sales Director Alessio Liati emphasized the project's scale and technical ambition: “Cannon Artes was chosen as the supplier of choice earlier this year, due to our proven ability to deliver large-scale and complex industrial wastewater treatment solutions that meet the highest environmental and efficiency standards. The water treatment plant alone spans an area comparable to three football fields, with more than 1,600 reverse osmosis membranes, 360 ultrafiltration modules, and over 17,000 square meters of active MBR membrane surface”.

The facility is part of a broader $2 billion initiative that includes a polyethylene plant, which will boast a production capacity close to two million tons annually. This advanced water treatment infrastructure is powered by Cannon Artes’ cutting-edge EmbioArt® Membrane BioReactor (MBR) for industrial effluent processing, coupled with ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) systems that treat cooling water blowdown for reuse.

An additional 600 cubic meters per hour remineralization plant complements the main facility. This section, equipped with advanced calcite filters, adjusts pH levels and reduces corrosivity in the treated water, highlighting Cannon Artes’ commitment to high-performance remineralization in industrial applications.

Construction on the facility began in August 2024, with infrastructure completion anticipated within six months, by early 2025. Full mechanical completion is targeted for the end of 2025, underscoring the company’s capacity to deliver on complex projects within ambitious timelines.
