Badenoch goes large on bikes with a WEEE event

A month of cycle events in Kingussie will return with a national re-cycling event on Saturday, June 3.

The Badenoch capital will begin its journey to this year's Bikeathon by welcoming a peloton which is travelling the country to promote the recycling of electrical gear: the WEEE Cycle Network Event.

By staging the ‘Waste Electrical and Electronic Event’ local residents will have the opportunity to get unwanted electricals re-used and recycled to support good causes in the Highlands.

The 10 cyclists will be arriving into the town around midday and stopping off at Gynack Gardens where they will be welcomed by members of Cycle Friendly Kingussie.

The event is part of a 15-year celebration of waste equipment recycling and is being led by REPIC, an organisation working with many respected electrical brands to meet their responsibilities under producer responsibility legislation.

The local event has been organised by Cycle Friendly Kingussie's Jannine Thompson, and REPIC's environmental affairs manager, Sarah Downes, who has recently relocated to Kingussie.

Cycle Friendly Kingussie will be running a balance bike picnic on the day as well as joining the peloton for a big ride out of the village.

The event launches a month of cycling activities culminating with the annual Bikeathon.

The peloton will be stopping on its mega trip from Alness to Sittingbourne in Kent.

The event takes place over a 15-day period, visiting 15 locations.

Residents can bag up their electricals and take them for recycling to ILM Highland, between 10.30am and 1pm. A van will be in the school car park near Gynack Gardens.

Sarah Downes, of REPIC said: "I’d like to encourage people to make use of this convenient, free of charge collection point and declutter unused or broken small electrical appliances.

Items that ILM Highland is happy to receive on its van during the WEEE amnesty event include:

Yes please

Small household appliances, e.g., kettles, irons, toasters, personal grooming products such as electric toothbrushes and shavers, hairdryers and straighteners;

IT and telecommunications equipment, e.g., PCs, laptops, mice, keyboard, printers/scanners and shredders;

Consumer equipment eg radios, DVD players, hi-fi Systems, musical instruments and cameras;

Electrical and electronic tools, eg sewing machines, electric drills and electrical screwdrivers and small electrical gardening tools;

Toys, leisure and sports equipment, eg Video games, pedometers, computers and torches.

No thanks

Large household appliances, eg washing machines, electric heating appliances, cookers, televisions and fridge or freezers;

Gas discharge lamps, fluorescent lighting, LED lighting, loose batteries.

NON-WEEE items eg packaging, furniture, building waste, general waste

Please remember to:

• bring all items with their cables, chargers and plugs.

• If batteries are removable, please take these out prior to disposal and recycle separately.

• Remove any packaging and take items out of bags prior to depositing.
